This is one of the obligatory courses for graduate students in forestry. It presents an overview of forestry research methodology, in both qualitative and quantitative approaches, fitting with the context and characteristics of forestry. The whole research process, from the elaboration of a research question, the collection of relevant data and information, the application of statistical analyses to the datatset and the interpretation of findings, is discussed. Students are guided to develop a research proposal, and to report the findings.

After completing the course, students are able to:

Present widely-used research approaches in forestry and discuss the steps of a research process.

Design a data collection strategy based on sampling and experimental design theories, to fit with the specific context of the forestry research issue.

Select appropriate statistical analysis methods according to the nature of the dataset and the research objectives.

Write several form of papers in the research process (proposal, research report, summary, and other scientific communication products).
